About Xeriscape Council of New Mexico

 Organization Description

The Xeriscape Council of New Mexico was formed in 1986/87 after a group of concerned green-industry professionals interested in the use of native plants in conservation efforts attended a Xeriscape Conference in Los Alamos, New Mexico.

 Council Projects

The Xeriscape Council is education and project oriented. Its current primary focus is to conduct a two-day conference every 12 months on water conservation and landscape. The Council plans to continue to bring high-level globally oriented experts and speakers to Albuquerque for the 2-day conference and to expand the offerings of free seminars for the Saturday, open to the public sessions. The Saturday sessions will focus on more practical 'how to' seminars on design, plant selection, irrigation and maintenance.

The Xeriscape Council incorporated in 1998 and received 501(c)(3) status in 1999. It can conduct educational programs, training sessions and conferences on the general topic of xeriscaping and its role in water conservation. The Council may consult and train on the general topic of xeriscaping, produce books, materials and reports, and conduct other general consulting activities regarding conservation.

 Mission & Goals
:

The group's main interest is to educate New Mexicans and others about water conservation and to promote the idea of using native, low-water plants and landscaping/irrigation methods in New Mexico as a means of water conservation. According to George Radnovich, landscape architect/designer, and current president, the Xeriscape Council of New Mexico has not only accomplished its original goal through multiple promotional means, but also influenced the City of Albuquerque in its current water-conservation initiatives which include a water-conservation ordinance and rebate programs which encourage residents to utilize water-conserving landscapes and irrigation methods, as well as water-saving facilities within their homes and businesses. The Council continues to work closely with the City on water-conservation efforts.

 Membership

Membership in the Xeriscape Council is open to the public; however, only active members may serve on its Board of Directors. Members include landscape architects and designers, horticulturists, former management consultants, landscaping company owners, master gardeners, Extension Agency professionals, homeowners, and grounds maintenance workers. The Council meets monthly throughout the year to plan and manage its activities. It has no regular, on-going expenses except for a post office box and website. There is no paid staff, or specific office space, and it operates totally with volunteers. Meetings are currently held at George Radnovich's office at Sites Southwest.
